We get so many wonderful things sent to our office, but sometimes a gadget arrives and we just can’t stop playing with it. Unsurprisingly, the Fun Fly Stick was one of the toys that wowed us. It’s a very simple concept – one stick, 3 Mylar shapes, the stick makes the shapes float – but when it’s put into action it looks amazing. Now, make sure you’re sitting comfortably, because here comes the science.
The Fun Fly Stick levitates a choice of five magic shapes by means of an inbuilt Van der Graaff generator (remember physics class? Check the internet, you’ll remember what it is). The wand generates an electrostatic charge when you hold down the button, so that when the shiny mylar shapes touch the Fun Fly Stick they too become charged and are then repelled (because opposites attract, and likes repel. . . is none of this ringing any bells? See us after class.) What this all means in terms of fun is that you can keep the shapes floating for as long as you want!
It takes a bit of practice, but after you get the hang of it you’ll be wielding it like a certain bespectacled schoolboy with a lightning shaped scar. You can even charge different parts of your body and have the floating shapes bouncing back and forth between your hand and the stick like a Wimbledon final.

When we were little kids, we played in sandboxes with toy steamshovels, drove die-cast dumptrucks, and stared in awe and wonder at the heavy equipment at construction sites. Is it the desire for demolition that drives our fascination with heavy equipment, or is it something deeper? Do we secretly long for a world where machines do our bidding? Of course we do, but we have learned from the lessons of Battlestar, haven’t we?
If we keep our machines tiny and simple, we may yet survive as a race. So say we all…
